Travel information

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands, located 20 minutes southwest of Amsterdam, in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer. It is the fifth busiest airport in Europe in terms of passengers.

Amsterdam Schiphol Train station

Schiphol train station is situated directly below the airport. Via Schiphol Plaza, you can walk straight to the departure or arrival hall. Follow the signs ‘trains’

Single-use Chipcard

You can travel on NS (the Dutch Railways) with a single-use chipcard. This single-use chipcard can be purchased at a NS ticket machine (with the blue sign and white NS logo across the top) or from the Tickets & Service desk at Schiphol, which is situated close to the red/white-checked cube at Schiphol Plaza. The single-use chipcard is a paper ticket that contains a chip and is valid for use with all train operators.

Important! When you travel with a single-use chipcard you must check in and out with each train operator through the gates or posts. Checking in with NS at the departure station Schiphol can be done by holding your chipcard up against the NS card reader in one of the gates or free-standing posts. At the arrival station, hold your chipcard up against the NS card reader in one of the gates or free-standing posts to check-out.

E-train tickets

You can buy your ticket online and simply print it yourself. This allows you to take care of everything whenever and wherever it suits you. All you have to do is complete the journey details and the passenger’s name, pay for the order and download and print the e-ticket. This means that you can board the train straight away! Make sure that you always have the e-ticket and valid proof of identity with the same name with you. You are required to show both when tickets are checked on the train and at stations. The date of travel shown on the e-ticket and the actual date of travel must be the same, and the same applies to the route travelled.

Only valid, when:

  • A valid e-ticket is in the passenger’s name, and the ID has to bear the same name. Your e-ticket is in your name and cannot be transferred to a different person.
  • An e-ticket is only valid if it is printed in A4 size. The confirmation e-mail sent to you is the receipt, and the attachment is the E-ticket. Be sure to print the attachment. Travelling on the basis of a printout of the receipt is not permitted. If you are travelling with an e-ticket then you use the square barcode on your e-ticket to open the gates.
